Deoinda wins Songlines Music Awards Deolinda wins Songlines Music Awards Following on from the success of last year's inaugural awards, Songlines magazine is delighted to announce this year's winners. The Songlines Music Awards recognise outstanding talent in world music and are voted by Songlines readers and the general public. There are four categories: Best Artist, Best Group, Cross-Cultural Collaboration and Newcomer – the results from the public vote generate the final nominees, the top four in each category. The winners, selected by the Songlines editorial team, listed below, are published in the June issue of Songlines, (#68) on sale in the UK from tomorrow, April 30. The winners will also be announced on BBC Radio 3's 'World on 3' programme, on April 30, by last year's Best Artist winner, Rokia Traoré. ![]() "The audience for world music is greater now than it's ever been," says Simon Broughton, editor-in-chief of Songlines, "and it's reaching out in ever more diverse directions. It's still essential to have awards in which the leading names can be celebrated and the new and innovative names highlighted." And the winners are: BEST ARTIST Goran Bregovic (for the album Alkohol on Wrasse Records) Goran Bregovic will be presented with his Songlines Music Award by Simon Broughton after his performance at the Festival de Jazz de Nice on July 18 BEST GROUP Staff Benda Bilili (for the album Tres Tres Fort on Crammed Discs) Staff Benda Bilili will be presented with their Songlines Music Award after their performance at WOMAD Charlton Park on July 23 CROSS-CULTURAL COLLABORATION Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara (for the album Tell No Lies on Real World) Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara will be presented with their Songlines Music Award after their performance at WOMAD Charlton Park on July 24 NEWCOMER Deolinda (for the album Canção ao Lado on World Connection) Deolinda will be presented with their Songlines Music Award by Jo Frost, Songlines editor, after their performance at CCB in Lisbon on June 8 A 16-track compilation album (SPLCD003) featuring the four winners and 12 final nominees is out now on CD and download. A Songlines Music Awards 2010 app, for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, featuring excerpts and profiles on the winners and nominees, is also available to download for free from the iTunes App store. Deolinda in top 100 of Times Deolinda's album Cancao ao Lado is on a third place in the top 20 of the world section of Times' top 100 of 2009:3 Deolinda: Cancao ao Lado (World Connection) Ana Bacalhau and her hip young colleagues combine strains of fado with a pop sensibility and an eye for the foibles of the people of Lisbon. They will play on Friday the 30th of October in Copenhagen. The exact location is still to be announced. Congratulations to Deolinda! Their latest show in London was wowed with the following review in the Times: Ana Bacalhau, a sensual figure blessed with infinitely mobile hips and infectious humour, was the centre of attention No question: the next time they come back, they will be playing a bigger venue. Ana Bacalhau and her colleagues might even end up giving the fado queen, Mariza, some serious competition. The Portuguese group’s debut album, Cançao do Lado, certainly belongs among the most uplifting releases of the year. - Clive Davis Deolinda still in the European World Music Charts Deolinda is still in the charts of the European world music dj panel that keeps an eye on everything that goes round in the field of world music. For the 4th month in a row, the album Cancao ao Lado is being pointed out as one of the best albums from today. It has gone from place 6 to place 18.
